Standard of Living - Patterson
The purpose of this lesson cycle is to compare standard of living in different parts of the world. Students will evaluate the reasons why countries become more developed. Students will become familiar how and why the global community has committed to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. Students will use their knowledge to assess presidential candidate’s plans to raise the quality of life of lower/middle class Americans. Monotheistic Religions - Patterson
The purpose of this lesson cycle is for students to gain a general understanding of the monotheistic religions found in the Middle East. Students will learn how religion can provide a moral and social code that influence an individual’s thoughts and behaviors. In the summative activity, students will respond to Trump’s proposed limitation of Muslim immigration (analyzing errors). Five Broken Cameras - Patterson
Students will watch a biased, pro-Palestinian documentary that uses propaganda techniques to manipulate viewers. Students will identify the issues that shape the thoughts and behaviors of stakeholders. Students will analyze the role of media, individuals, and governments over the course of the documentary. Students will hone their personal feelings by debating settlers (other students) about the core issues in the documentary. This lesson cycle also helps students understand how a community’s past shapes the average standard of living. There is a PowerPoint that contains visuals for this lesson cycle. Palestine vs. Israel Conflict - Patterson
Students will learn about the social, political, and economic issues that prevent the Israelis and Palestinians from getting along. As a culminating activity, students will have a peace summit to come up with a plan based on evidence to end the conflict. A small group of students in each class have been asked to adopt radical views to challenge more moderate viewpoints in the debate. Banksy Project - Patterson
In this lesson cycle, students will learn about the graffiti artist Banksy and make generalizations about his political artwork. Students will focus on how Banksy uses symbols to allow viewers to think about a topic in a new way. Students will create their own art project that uses abstract symbols to convey a political message. Students will write an informative text that outlines their artistic vision. Oil and OPEC - Patterson
Students will compare and contrast countries with high and low standards of living to determine the issues that cause inequality within communities. While playing an academic game, teams will develop a winning strategy when all options appear equal. Students will graph their game data to show how trends correlate to the economic principles of supply and demand. Students will speculate how countries could use the supply-demand seesaw as an economic weapon (1973 Oil Crisis). Teams will take a stance about which OPEC country is impacted the most by low price of crude oil and what should be done to help people living there.
