Human Rights - Patterson
The primary focus of this unit is to introduce students to the idea that there are guaranteed rights that every human should have access to. Students will play an investment game to understand why products are made outside of the United States. They will trace items at Callanan back to the source of origin and analyze the corresponding data. Students will watch parts of the Netflix documentary True Cost and analyze the broad themes present in the documentary, working conditions, environment, and manipulative advertising. This work falls within the Civics scale provided by the district. There is a PowerPoint that contains visuals for this lesson cycle. The file is too large to upload. Please email [email protected]. Investment Simulation - Patterson
Students compete with each other to bring capital into their country. Groups alter their countries union regulations, tax rates, child, minimum wage, and environmental laws in order to "win." The first resource outlines the simulation rules/objectives. The second resource contains the bidding and credit sheets. The third resources is the original simulation before it was adapted to the middle school level. |

Human Rights PBL - Calesisi, Austin, Cochran, Sweet and Patterson
The purpose of this PBL is for students to become familiar the concept of universal human rights, so they can identify violations taking place around the world. If implemented in its entirety, the PBL will take 18 days to complete. There is a calendar in the first document that outlines the unit and when technology is required.

Globe Project - Patterson
In this end of the year project students create a 3d globe by using skills that they have mastered over the course of the year. The project will take circa six days and require the materials outlined in the resource. This is an excellent project to keep the students engaged at the end of the year. This project was modified so it could be completed in a shorter time frame than was originally required. There is a link at the bottom of the resource that has the original instructions and pictures of the final product. |

Vietnamese Culture - Patterson/Smith
In this three day lesson cycle students learn about Vietnamese culture. The lesson centers on a documentary and several readings that are designed to get students to be more open to things that are foreign to them. The documentary link is at the bottom of the first resource. In the film there are points where the tour guide orders a beer. Instead of shying away from this I decided to address this head on. Students will learn about the correlation between low alcoholic beer consumption and lack of clean drinking water in Vietnam. Part 6 Nacirema is about America. Key pronouns are spelled backward. |
